Views & Opinions

Will the real women in power please stand up!

(Disclaimer: Views are my own, and I’m well aware this might be an unpopular opinion, and a bit harsh demanding accountability from my fellow women. But at this point, when most men in power have disappointed greatly, with a lot of hope…
here’s looking at you Madam Kamala Harris & Co.)

As I spend my day receiving, sending, replying to and eventually deleting motivational Women’s Day messages, I have a question for women everywhere, especially world leaders.

Remember that wildly popular book?
‘Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus’ which highlighted key differences in the personalities of men and women due to the X and Y chromosomes.

It’s probably because of these personality differences that women everywhere have spent centuries proving they’re equal in a world essentially designed by men.
Yes, men and women are equal, yet inherently different! Nobody can dispute that.
But shouldn’t this be our strength?
Yin and yang. Heads and tails.
Shouldn’t our differences be equally incorporated to the advantage of the human race, in order to bring a healthy balance to our world?

Today I cannot help but remember, the day Kamala Harris was elected Vice President of the great United States of America, nobody…and I mean absolutely nobody…could state that simple fact without mentioning that she was the ‘first woman’ to get there.
And it had struck a nerve even then.

Why was it so hard to introduce Kamala Harris as Vice President, without her genetic credentials?
Why are people even today, not just seen as INDIVIDUAL beings contributing to the human race without any labels attached?
Surely she got to that position because of her merit, hard work and what she could do for her nation?
I mean no disrespect. She is and will remain an inspiration to many young girls everywhere.
But her being a woman should be the
by-product of the fact that she was simply the best PERSON for the job.
Isn’t repeatedly stressing on her gender, in a way, a disservice to feminism?
Because while it definitely is a milestone achieved, we are clearly still far away from equality if we need to celebrate it with such fanfare. Like it’s a once in a blue moon occurrence!

Kamala Harris herself seemed to be doubly proud that day, as she had every right to be, having made history.
So today when our world is in such a horrific state of damage and destruction, mainly because of decisions made by old unhinged men, I really want to ask America’s first woman Madam Vice President…
Was this title the extent of her ambition?!
To simply get (closest) to the top?
As the very first woman in this prestigious position what unique trait, skill or feminine quality has she brought to the table?

Kamala Harris is really just the perfect example to plead my case. But it’s not only her.
Today I’m wondering if all extremely successful women, in an effort to break the glass ceiling, have to groom, harden and silence themselves to play by the cut-throat rules made by men?
Do most women in power – political, corporate or in any sphere really, have to deviate so far from their nurturing spirit in order to fit into a man’s world, that they lose touch with their compassion?

Today as we see images of innocent children dying, people displaced in several parts of the world, I want to ask these women on International Women’s Day…was this sacrifice you made, of your empathy and maternal instincts worth it?

My writing this today is in no way, to gender shame or pin the blame only on women. If anything I have been a cheerleader from the start.
But today, from one woman to another, I’m only requesting very humbly, that you remember your first identity in this world.
That moment of your birth when the gynaecologist announced, ‘It’s a girl!’
I’m asking you to celebrate the fact that you accomplished so much…but don’t stop now.
I’m asking you, today more than ever, to use your voice and platform, and to do your duty as a woman!

One of my most favourite scenes from the movie ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ keeps playing on repeat in my mind.
When the overprotective father doesn’t permit the daughter he loves to step out of his comfort zone and boundaries.
The daughter cries (but of course) with her mother, and complains,
‘what he says goes, the man is the head of the house.’
To which her mother coolly replies,
“A man is the head, but the woman is the neck and she can turn the head anyway she wants.”
Iconinc! Because it’s true.

So to all the women leaders of our world, today it’s up to you to extend this trait to benefit our global family.
We do understand your fear, that if you don’t metamorph and mimic ‘hunters’ instead of remaining ‘gatherers,’ your spot at the top, that you’ve worked so hard to achieve may be taken away from you.

But it’s time for all accomplished women to put their high-heeled foot down; use their feminine smarts and softness to try and change these horrific decisions taken by hyper-aggressive men, who’ve clearly lost sight of reason, rationale and seemingly their conscience.
Now is the time to do the balancing act, be the neck, and prevent men from turning into monsters, leaving our world in ruins.

Now is the time to show the world that we women indeed are different! And therein lies our real strength and power.
Only then, will it truly be a Happy Women’s Day….
