To the caregiver,

The feeling of HELPLESSNESS is real,
The helplessness of not being able to do enough,
The helplessness in the wait,
The helplessness of alienation,
When you want to reach out to the one you love, who is going to hell and hopefully back,
But are kept out the door unceremoniously like the gatekeeper.

You feel the pain,
Yet it’s not you who the pain is directly touching;
You feel the hope, anger, sorrow, grief,
Yet it’s all on behalf of someone else;
And then there’s the haunting guilt.
Guilt for not being the one to suffer,
And yet it doesn’t feel like you’ve escaped suffering altogether;
It’s simply there…unlabelled, undefined.

It’s a state of suspension,
Like you’re hanging mid-air,
Not sure if you’ll crash,
Or land firmly on your feet;
It’s the feeling of reaching out with both arms outstretched,
Yet being able to grab nothing but air;
Clinging desperately to adrenaline, tears and a prayer!

Helplessness is that feeling,
Very low on the rung of feelings,
That nobody talks about,
Probably because this way or that, things will change,
While you empty yourself in search of some hidden strength;
Nobody teaches you how to address it,
You’re simply expected to give up all control and cope,
But it’s still real!

To all the helpless out there…
To those who feel invisible, inefficient and inadequate right now,
This one’s for you…I see you…I am you.
