My father was a science graduate. Needless to say his mind followed a very rational line of thought.
“Where’s the logic in this?”
“What is the science behind it?”
He would say, dismissing any and every irrational superstition or limitation that society flung my way, which did not appeal to his logical bent of mind.
He was also a great believer in soul-searching and the Bhagwad Gita, truly believing that if its teachings could be imbibed in daily life, we would have all the answers we need for a healthy, happy life.
I grew up on a diet of legendary
debates and discussions between my grandfather and my father. On politics, business and life, with spiritual solutions generously applied to everyday situations.
As teenagers, these were fondly referred to as ‘dad’s lectures’! The roll of my eyes, I had hoped, would be shield enough from all this excruciatingly boring stuff sinking in.
I now know, it was not!
My dad’s ‘lectures’ sneakily snuck past my exasperated eyes and somehow found their way into my subconscious.
Because now, I find myself actively searching for both…science and spirituality in everything.
I go through every situation that comes my way, with my mind demanding a rational scientific explanation.
But that is as far as science can go!
For centuries, the entire human race, has been engaged in the research of things that exist and take place…within our body, in the environment around us, beneath the earth, or in outer space.
We spend our lifetimes merely discovering the things that have been already put out there for us to use and enjoy;
things that seem unrelated but are all secretly working together in an extremely delicate balance to sustain our very existence.
And our entire education system is dedicated to merely figuring out how all of this works.
It is nothing but an effort to decipher… a hope to understand just a small percent of what nature and the Higher Power have already done for us.
And even then, most of us either quit or die trying.
It is simply too much to comprehend in one’s lifetime.
But our souls already know ‘who’ did it!
Who tilted the earth just right?
Who created our life, our breath, our cells.
Who created organelles inside every single cell, each one of which miraculously know what their precise job is.
Who thought to add ‘magnets’ to celestial heavenly bodies by filling their core with iron so we could all remain grounded by gravity and not fly off into oblivion ?
Who put enough cholorohyll in tiny plants to feed every single life form on earth, for eternity?
Who thought to make the star, a burning ball of fire that becomes the energy source, powerful enough to sustain the entire living race.
Read any middle school science or geography text book, go through the facts about life on our planet and it’s mesmerising to wonder… who did this…for us?
Who. Loves. Us. That. Much?
All the knowledge that the human race has so far amassed, is merely the YouTube tutorial for the magic that already is our universe and beyond.
So I do not look at science and spirituality as different from each other. One does not need to be of either one bent of mind.
They are not mutually exclusive. In fact they are completely intertwined.
And no matter how many different ways I stress on this…is not enough!
Science is simply what becomes of spirituality once the mystery is removed, and logic and reasoning are attached.
A scientist, no different from an artist, is so overwhelmed by the magic that the universe represents, that he simply uses his analytical skills to unveil the mysteries of nature.
And this is how I find myself living my life, at the crossroads of science and spirituality. Using science as the translator to explain the workings of our world, the hows and the whys to the ‘Who’ that my soul already knows.
And in this delicate balance of connecting with our souls…and applying scientific temper to everyday living, may lie the answer to a healthy, happy, balanced life.
