(Making sense of us)

What if…
Somewhere beyond the clouds and stars;
someone up there has a child, whom they love very much;
a child, who enjoys bedtime stories, like every other;
and each night snuggled in a blanket of stars,
her Heavenly Father makes up a new bedtime tale just for her.
What if…
Each one of us is just that;
a fairytale borne out of the imagination of a loving parent for their child;
just another story set against the backdrop of this world…
No more, no less!
Then again, maybe that’s immaterial;
because storybook characters…whether they’re real or not,
have feelings still;
they’re still true to their part;
committed to their role;
aimed to entertain;
but also, to serve as a cautionary tale,
a warning against the dangers of the world;
and to teach values and empathy…
so the child can emote,
with us make-believe people,
she didn’t even know until that night,
but who now feel like a part of her life.
Maybe that’s all we are meant to be…
Images of a fable that get forever imprinted,
on the insides of heavy eyelids,
laden and sealed with sleep,
so we are the last thing she remembers of that day,
and the first thing she takes with her into her dreams.
Maybe a story is all we ever will be…
The star of our own show,
but merely a cameo in another’s;
and whether or not we ace the audition,
and make a grand appearance,
in the next night’s production,
solely depends on how well we handle,
the success of this stardom today.
So when our own life’s drama threatens to overwhelm;
when we mistakenly start to believe it’s all about us;
that the whole world exists, just for us;
when the ‘why-me’ syndrome takes over;
and we whip out the victim card once again,
maybe…it’ll serve us well to remember,
‘Why not me?’
After all, we are only dressed up stick-figures,
here to role play for someone else’s pleasure.
And that’s ok!
Because maybe, on some other day, it’s our turn to be that little child;
filled with wide-eyed wonder,
listening to the tales of others,
that He, who loves us so immensely, spins just for us;
teaching us lessons; making us feel; helping us grow,
Until, snuggled safely in our Father’s lap…
we finally, fall asleep!
