The art of writing is undoubtedly a blessing. To be able to articulate your thoughts into words is a skill set that is a treasured gift.
But what most people don’t see, is that writing is merely the instrument. A writer has to be primarily and more importantly a thinker first. What seems like an effortless few minutes to pen something down, could very well be a thought, that took days, months often years to marinate within the walls of the mind.
I can say with complete confidence that Robert Frost probably did not stroll into the woods on just that one snowy evening!
So before you ask a writer to not be ‘so invested’ in something. Before you casually say, ‘forget it and move on! How does this affect your life?’
think about what you’re asking them to do. You’re asking them to stop that constant cacophony of opionions and analysis that play on loop in their mind. You’re asking them to stop that endless internal dialogue and conversation they have with themselves. You’re essentially asking them to betray the essence of their being!
How do you assume they even have a choice?
It’s like asking a dancer to never dance. An artist to stop painting. A doctor to stop healing. A scientist to not be curious about the how and why…to never invent.
That is not a weight you want on your conscience!
Case in point…recently I was reminded of this when, 11 year old Dania Khan shared her brilliant, brilliant poem with me that was inspired by brutal violence that she heard about on news.
In case you didn’t read that, I will repeat myself.
She. Is. Eleven!
An age when most are carefree and unconcerned with the happenings of the adult world. Instead, her impressionable mind was affected by a highly sensitive issue that most grown ups shy away from, or are callously unaffected by.
She has never met me. Her mother Uzma shared her work with me, to get my opinion…instead Dania ended up shaking me to my core with hers.
I can very clearly see how many layers of her rational, thinking mind she must have had to penetrate in order to reach this part of her soul. As a human being she has given me the much needed reassurance, for the future of our world. If strong, brave voices like hers are willing to speak up, there is still hope.
Which is why I feel compelled to share her work on my page, in the hope that a few more may read it. Because as a writer it doesn’t matter if you have a readership of a million. If your words impact even one life and mind, the purpose of your being is accomplished!
