Things I want my children to know – 4: Parental Interrogation decoded

When I was young and would return home after a night out with my friends, my father would always ask me questions based on the logistics and statistics of my night…

How many people were there?

Was the place full?

What did everyone eat?

What did everyone drink?

How did you split the bill?

…the usual ‘dad’ questions that would amuse me because of the mundane, practical details that seemed to interest him.

Now that I’m a mum and my children are venturing out to have experiences that don’t always include me…surprise, surprise…I find myself asking very similar questions.

Took me this long to realise, it’s not the details of the business establishment that my dad was interested in. It was his subtle way of building a picture in his mind about the events that transpired in the lives of his children, that he wasn’t always privy to.

So please, as you grow, indulge me and answer my many, repetitive questions with more than just a perfunctory ‘fine’!

Because it’s true, I have just discovered…

…eventually, we all do become our parents!
