Dearly beloved,
We are gathered here today to mourn the sad demise of humanity. It lived long and served us well, until it met its untimely end. Its death has come as a rude shock to all of us who loved it, for it’s truly hard to imagine our lives without it in our midst.
It will, of course, continue to live on forever in our memories. We can tell future generations the glorious stories of humanity that we shall find buried in dusty old books of history and literature. Stories, that will reveal to them, that once upon a time, humanity was real. It existed, and was hale and hearty. That was when people could still listen to the voice of their hearts. Before it was drowned by the soot of wealth and corporate numbers; greed and power, religion and terror.
Our children will find it difficult to believe, no matter how much we convince them, that in simpler times, people were actually nice to one another.
They tipped their hats to perfect strangers wishing them a cheery good morning in the town streets.
They may laugh if we tell them, that there was a time when they could actually help a blind person cross the street, without worrying that he was only pretending to be visually challenged, so he could rob them.
Times, when parents did not have to worry about their children playing unattended on streets for a few minutes; or going to a school without multiple security forces guarding them.
When bombs were not being flung casually across oceans and vans were not ploughing down people on a street.
When racism, brutality, discrimination, may have existed but were not so commonplace that they had become dinnertime conversations.
Well, we can always blame the cause of its death on technology, and the exposure it brings. Or we can blame it on the government, as we do all else.
But the outcome remains the same.
Humanity is dead!
Well, it isn’t extinct though. It can still be found today. If we look hard enough, we’ll find some of it on Facebook pages. Amidst the multiple posts of helpless, innocent children being sexually violated and animals brutally murdered. You know, the stories that make our souls squirm, and make us scroll up the screen as quickly as possible, fervently wishing there was a way to ‘unsee’ what we had just read.
Sometimes, sandwiched in between those posts we find some heartwarming videos showcasing humanity at its finest. When one soul reaches out to another, in times of trouble without thinking of its own well being first.
These hope-inducing stories are often aptly titled ‘humanity still exists’.
And more often than not….they feature animals. Animals helping one another, or animals guarding their owners during calamities. Ironic isn’t it? That ‘Human’ity is now more commonly found in animals.
So what does that make us humans?? Is the human race going through some sort of reverse evolution, I wonder? At least the barbaric cavemen had discovered fire to keep the beasts out of their caves. What do we need to discover, in order to keep our innocent safe from depraved monsters? We could probably try rubbing two iPhones together. Maybe that will create a spark, or a flame or some sort of magic that will protect them from the absolute scum of the earth.
Maybe, just maybe, it will revive humanity!
But until then, we simply have to get used to the sad fact that what dinosaurs were to us; humanity will be to our children…extinct!

Yes. When people who claim to ‘be human’ do otherwise. That being said, I still believe humanity exists. I think if we can be more human, we can revive it in those that have lost it. Wonderful subject and beautifully articulated as always Nitya! 😊

Sadly humanity is getting more and more disgusting nowadays. No wonder people are turning towards relying on animals and plants for guaranteed affection and harmlessness instead of counting on your neighbour or cousin. Kids get assaulted, trafficked, killed by their own parents daily but this crime truly shocked the world. Laws must be made more severe as people are literally getting away with murder ! Well written Nitya ! Keep up the good work.
